The last couple of years have certainly been filled with unexpected challenges for many people ranging from job losses or changes, health-related issues due to Covid-19, and learning to live in the “new normal”, which for many of us hasn’t been easy.
But we are hopeful that we are finally rounding the corner and as Americans, we have a history of persevering in the face of adversity. If you’re like many people today, you may be asking yourself, “Where do I go from here?” We think the answer is simple: “You go forward”.
We look to the past for inspiration – and in a Pew Research Center study it showed that Americans think back to the most significant historic events of their lifetime, three had the greatest impact1. They are:
- The moon landing – a triumph of perseverance and technology that shows the power of planning and will
- Response to 9/11 – a time of frightening adversity when Americans came together to prove the power of positive action and optimism
- Technology transformation – a period of rapid change and progress that showed how vision and innovation drive results.
These three challenges that Americans have overcome, have also inspired us to move ahead with great confidence and pride over the course of our lives and to realize that with planning and determination, we can overcome any adversity. Those lessons can also help you move forward in your own financial life.
Here’s what we’ve discovered it’s important to do:
- Set goals, develop a plan, and adjust your plan as needed
- Keep moving forward with optimism to fuel your resiliency
- Embrace financial innovation and forward-thinking to adapt and help grow
- Be decisive when needed and take action
